Abstract:   Integrated circuit technology is no longer providing the dramatic improvements in capability that fueled the race from megaflop to petaflop computers. Performance is now determined largely by power efficiency, and future gains will rely more upon architecture and circuit techniques than on IC technology. In order to continue historic rates of improvement, we must unwind much of the architectural complexity we have built up over the years, creating processors designed for efficient throughput processing rather than maximum per-thread performance. The implications on software design are significant, both for programming systems and scientific applications. This talk will highlight the upcoming changes and the impact on computational scientists.
