Abstract:   Ocean water desalination is an important issue to guarantee a sufficient supply with clean drinking water for the increasing mankind. Electrodialysis is a promising technology in this area which uses ion exchange membranes to separate ionic species from sea water under the influence of an applied electric field. This technology is used in practice but insight to the fundamental processes in the technical devices, governing the ion transport in the flow channel and membranes are not well understood. Simulation will help to obtain a deeper understanding.
Simulation of electrodialysis processes requires the coupling of different phenomena: fluid flow with mass and ion transport in channels with complex geometry, driven by a pressure gradient, is overlaid by an electrical field which introduce an additional driving force on the charged ions. We develop a multi-species extension of the well-known Lattice-Boltzmann method for the channel flow, which then needs to be coupled to an electric field solver where we apply a classical Finite-Volume WENO scheme for the Maxwell equations. Performance and scalability of both solvers will be shown in detail. Both solvers scale up to 100.000 cores on Jugene (BlueGene/P at JSC) as well as on Hermit (Cray XT6 at HLRS).
