Abstract:   Now approaching a decade long tradition at ISC, a close examination will be presented of the recent year’s accomplishments and advances in the field of HPC. Of particular importance is the transition from multi-core sockets to many-core components and near-term realization of 10 Petaflops system performance. Closely monitored will be the science accomplishments enabled by this new generation of Petaflops computers and the continued challenges imposed on future HPC systems by increasingly important problem classes such as dynamic graph problems. Even as supercomputers are continuing to extend their reach across the Petaflops performance regime, the increasingly significant modality of Cloud computing will be considered in light of major thrusts by industry in this arena over the last year and the challenges still ahead for clouds in achieving their ultimate goal of ubiquitous access to high end capability by industry, commerce, academia, and possibly even government agencies. Of particular interest this year will be a discussion of the needs and possibilities in the key area of programming models as the challenge of coordinating a million-cores for a single user problem becomes a reality. Combined with this will be a briefing on the emergence of new runtime systems to enable dynamic adaptive methods employing increasingly sophisticated introspection for increasing efficiency and scalability while dramatically decreasing energy usage. Like every year, this Keynote Address will offer the latest “Canonical HPC System”, a hypothetical machine in hardware and software that best exemplifies the mean of the form, function, and capabilities of HPC over the last 12 months. Finally, major strides have been undertaken internationally towards the frontiers of Exascale computing and these aggressive path-finding advances will be investigated as ISC looks forward across the future of this evolving decade in HPC.
