|Abstract:||The increasing awareness of the limited availability of fossil fuels and the higher sensibility towards the environmental issues have increased scientific research activities related to the energetic use of biomass for sustainable heat and power generation. The production of burnable gases in fluidized bed reactors is regarded as one of the most promising techniques to efficiently exploit the energy content of biomass.
Although wood gasification has been technically used since more than a century there still is a lack of fundamental understanding of the complex interactions of fluid mechanics and thermal behaviour in fluidized bed reactors. Due to this lack of fundamental understanding the design of fluidized bed reactors for the combustion and gasification of biomass as well as coal is often based on empirical correlations.
Detailed models and numerical simulations will address fundamental physical-chemical aspects of biomass conversion on a level not achievable with current capabilities of measurement techniques. The simulations of reactive two-phase flow including detailed chemistry and transport models presented here are based on both Euler-Euler and Euler-Lagrange models.
