Abstract:   Coal makes up almost 70% of China’s energy supply and will be maintained at a high level in the foreseeable future. The complexity of coal in terms of both composition and processing has proposed great challenges to its efficient and green utilization. Different routes should each be well scaled-up, optimized and then integrated to maximize overall efficiency and minimize global environmental impact. Experiments with multi-stage trial-and-error can hardly fulfill this goal due to their high cost, long time span and limited measurement and analyzing tools, whereas traditional simulation approaches can not meet the accuracy, speed and efficiency (ASE) required for such purpose.
In recent years, the Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences has been developing a consistent multi-scale approach, from model, algorithm, software to hardware, to achieve a high level of ASE with necessary input from more detailed and precise experiments. The Mole series supercomputers were established as one of the most powerful and green systems for process engineering and have been applied successfully in the designing and optimization of different coal utilization processes, such as pyrolysis, gasification, liquefaction, combustion and various coal-chemical processes, as well as in renewable energy and biotechnology. Petaflops sustainable performance and real-time simulation of some industrial scale equipment, with multi-phase flow transport and reaction processes, can now be expected in the near future.
