Abstract:   Data center energy costs are rising rapidly, significantly affecting the bottom line. In addition, data center energy consumption is having a significant impact on the environment and is estimated to account for more than a quarter of global CO2 emissions from information and communications technology. In this session Platform Computing, an IBM Company, will discuss how workload management can drive data center efficiency through automated power management. Power costs typically change throughout the course of a day and week according to aggregate demand. However, by leveraging application workload characteristics, resource requirements and scheduling priorities, workloads can be optimally scheduled for periods when energy costs are lower without compromising SLAs. Through deploying green strategies such as power usage optimization and ‘hot spot’ temperature leveling of the data center, data center administrators can maximize application workload throughput while reducing power and cooling costs.
