Name: BoF 7: Effective Use of Cloud Bursting for HPC
Time: Tuesday, June 19, 2012
3:45 PM - 4:30 PM
Room:   Hall C2.1
CCH - Congress Center Hamburg
Speakers:   Martijn de Vries, Bright Computing
Abstract:   Martijn de Vries and a system architect from Amazon Web Services (AWS) will demonstrate and discuss an intuitive yet powerful approach to extending on-premise HPC clusters into EC2. The demonstration will step the audience through the simple mouse clicks to open an EC2 session and how these cloud-based CPUs and GPUs are provisioned, scheduled, monitored and managed as part of the on-premise cluster. The demonstration will also cover fast and effective networking outside of the firewall, data management and cost containment. The speakers will discuss brief use cases for when to cloud burst, or not, using customer examples to illustrate. Martijn will then show how to set up HPC clusters to automatically burst into the cloud when additional capacity or capabilities such as GPUs are needed, and how the workload manager directs cloud-ready applications (and data) when cloud bursting is needed, and shuts down EC2 nodes when jobs are completed. An alternative scenario, where an entirely new cluster is created in EC2 and managed as if a local cluster will be briefly demonstrated.
