Abstract:   We present a short performance evaluation of the use of GPU acceleration in the computational electromagnetic simulation software package FEKO. To this end, we focus on the Method of Moments (MoM) solution technique that is particularly suited to the simulation of currents on metallic surfaces and wires, as well as radiation in free space. This makes it invaluable in fields such as antenna design and scattering analysis.

In any large-scale software package, there are a number of factors limiting the adoption of a new acceleration technique such as the use of GPUs. The approach that often finds the most traction is to start with external libraries that allow for a minimally invasive implementation. The results presented show how the use of the MAGMA library on two NVIDIA C2070 GPUs yields up to a 7x speedup over multi-core Intel MKL for the linear algebra phases of the MoM solution process in complex double precision.

Due to the computational composition of the MoM process, the 7x speedup in the linear algebra phases only yields a total solution speedup of around 2x for the benchmark problem considered. For further application acceleration, it is required to consider the other phases of the process, with the next phase to consider clearly indicated by the results.
