Abstract:   To meet future demands of exascale systems new I/O concepts are required since compute power and performance of storage technologies are developing at different speed. With PCIe flash cards a new fast, persistent storage technology is emerging which can bridge the performance gap between volatile main memory and persistent disk-based storage devices. The poster describes the status of the Juniors project. The project goal is to deploy two large prototypes with integrated flash card storage. The first is based on standard x86 technology while the second prototype will be a Blue Gene/Q system, a new generation of supercomputers. These prototypes make it possible to explore and test this new technology under realistic conditions at a centre which operates supercomputers of the highest performance class. Within this project the IBM Böblingen Laboratory, the Jülich Supercomputing Centre and the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre CSCS collaborate on the specification and deployment of the prototypes, benchmarking of these systems, development and implementation of concepts for integrating flash cards within an HPC system, assessment of energy efficiency and investigation of performance benefits for realistic use cases of scientific applications.
