Abstract:   This poster aims to present India’s key computational research sectors and its journey through the supercomputing road to fulfill the national research needs. In late 1980s due to difficulties in importing powerful computers, Indian Government launched five national initiatives to develop India’s own supercomputer in the gigaflops range resulting in indigenous development of Flosolver, Anupam, PACE, CHIPPS, PARAM 8000 parallel machines. India is among the few leading countries in the world that have instantiated the supercomputing regime.

Recent HPC Activities in India

  • Premier national research organizations host supercomputing facilities from tens to hundreds of teraflops to carry out R&D in the strategic sectors such as space sciences, defense, nuclear research, earth sciences etc.

  • GARUDA is national grid initiative connecting 17 cities across 45 academic and research institutes country wide

  • C-DAC regularly conducts HPC workshops and national level symposiums

  • Indigenous hardware products such as Reconfigurable Computing System, PARAMNet-3 (a high performance cluster interconnect)

  • Indigenous software products such as Onama, C-DAC’s HPC Resource Management Engine (CHReME), Integrated Cluster Solution (InClus)

  • C-DAC Certified HPC Professional Certification Program offers a standardized scale to map the HPC skill-sets of professionals in this domain, and enable them to pursue careers in HPC.

India is gearing up to make a strong come-back in the supercomputing race. With an aim to build computational capacity of exascale, concerted efforts by various premier research and academic institutes will play a pivotal role.
