Abstract:   This will be a very special event, and the ISC conference will again pioneer a new concept in bringing relevant HPC information to its visitors. After breakthrough ideas such as TOP500 and Vendors on the Hot Seat, Exascale Chats will bring information in a new format to ISC. Conferences focus on papers, posters, and exhibits, but we all know that it is the people, our community, who make HPC such a special scientific field. Exascale Chats will bring the personal dimension to the conference, by engaging some key figures and movers in HPC in a personal dialogue. Understanding what moves these leaders of the field will hopefully lead to a better understanding of trends and directions, as we move towards the exascale era. Horst Simon, a well known expert in algorithms and applications of supercomputers with a 30 year history in the field will engage in a conversation with three of the current thought leaders in HPC and lead the discussion. He will question his colleagues about their perspective on exascale computing, but also engage them in questions about their careers and what drives them to excel. His guests are:

  • Christian Bischof has been developing HPC in a university context since 1998, first at RWTH Aachen University, and since last year, at Technische Universität Darmstadt. His particular interest lies in addressing the software gap in HPC. In particular, he is championing the development of “software as infrastructure” and service infrastructures for HPC as a necessary complement of architectural advances towards the exascale, as well as educational reform to address the lack of trained personnel in HPC software and tool development.

  • Yutong Lu, who is director designer for Tianhe-1A, the number one system in the world in November 2010, and other new HPC systems in China. It is systems like these that have propelled this emerging new world power in supercomputing into the limelight of international interest. With China’s ambition to be a world class player in HPC, she will be able to give us insights into exciting developments soon to come.

  • Mark Seager, who has led for many years the successful deployment of new HPC system at Lawrence Livermore National Labs in the US, one of the premier supercomputing sites in the world. He surprised the community by recently joining Intel, where his systems integration and applications experience will be an important driver towards future exascale technology to be developed by Intel.
